Michael Douglas accepts Best Actor for ‘Behind the Candelabra’ jokes with Matt Damon and talks being unable to visit his son in jail
There was a lot wrapped up in Michael Douglas’ acceptance speech tonight at the 65th Annual Emmy Awards.
First there were some raunchy jokes to his partner in Behind the Candelabra, Matt Damon….Michael thanking him for assistance on the “two-handed” project. “You’re only as good as your other hand,” he joked. Damon of course played Liberace’s life-partner in the mini-series. Backstage Michael admitted that the reaction from the audience took him by surprise. “Obviously, this picture had special meaning to me,” he said. “One day, I’m dealing with mortality issues regarding my cancer, and the next day, this jewel was handed to me, this beautiful script, and Steven and Matt.”
Douglas also mentioned his son, Cameron, who is currently serving a prison sentence for drug trafficking. “If you happen to have a slip, this for a prisoner who is not violent … they punish you,” he said. “In my son’s case, he has spent almost two years in solitary confinement, and right now I’m being told I cannot see him for two years. It’s been over a year now, and I’m questioning the system. Obviously, at first I was disappointed with my son, but I’ve reached a point now where I’m very disappointed with the system.”
Thanks Michael….for an always interesting speech.
