Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is speaking out against the cash-strapped city’s previous requests for donations to offset costs associated with Michael Jackson’s public funeral.
Villaraigosa says reaching out to Michael Jackson fans, AEG concert promoters, and The Jackson family to pay for security at last week’s memorial is ridiculous.
A city councilwoman who was filling in for a vacationing Villaraigosa set up a website that asked the public for donations to offset the city’s $1.4 million funeral costs. The website, which raised $35,000, was shut down last Friday.
“This is a world-class city, and we provide fire and police protection, period,” Villaraigosa said. “The idea that we would charge the family for a funeral is nonsensical.”
