Marcus Mariota Says Playing Soccer Helped Give Him His Skills As A Football Player
Marcus Mariota is one of the hottest players getting ready to enter the 2015 NFL season after a stellar college career. However, football is not the only sport that has helped him become the star player that he is today.
Like many other people when they were younger, Mariota played a bit of soccer when he was younger, and he attributes his days of playing soccer to his current success as a football star.
He played three seasons as the quarterback of the Oregon Ducks, leading them to a national championship in his final season with the team, eventually losing to Ohio State.

Marcus Mariota cited soccer as something that crafted who he is today when saying “I think soccer is a great fundamental sport — I think it built a foundation for me as an athlete.” He has always been fast on his feet, whether rushing for a big gain or throwing the ball while on the run.
He went on to say “I think soccer is just such a game where you have to understand the complexities and the system of what’s going on, and you have to know that before you get the ball. And once you get the ball, you have to react. I think that has helped my growth not only as a football player but as an athlete.”
It is easy to see how soccer has helped him when fans see how much of a runner he is at the quarterback position, unlike many others. It will be interesting to see how his style translates to the NFL, but he outplayed his opponents the majority of his college career, leading to his Heisman Trophy.
Marcus Mariota was selected with the second overall pick of the 2015 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans. They are hoping that he can be the next franchise quarterback for the team after struggling to find a quality player at the position for several years.
