Speaking of Madonna: The Material Girl is turning her star power to improving the notorious slums of Rio de Janeiro — which happens to be the hometown of Madge’s 23-year-old Brazilian BF, Jesus Luz.

Last month, Madonna launched the construction of a multimillion dollar girls’ school she is funding in Malawi, the native country of the singer’stwo children. The 51-year-old star will be in Rio later this week to visit some of the Brazilian city’s famed slums, or “favelas”, and meet with one of the country’s richest businessmen to discuss setting up social projects, says state Governor Sergio Cabral. Madonna’s meeting with the governor of the state to discuss sponsoring a documentary about kids living in the squalid hillside slums.

“She will get to know some social projects; she is enchanted with Rio and wants to help,” Cabral said. The beachside city has about 1,000 slums, many of them controlled by violent drug gangs or other armed groups.

A major outbreak of violence followed Rio’s selection to host the 2016 Olympics last month.
