Sleazy Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has set off the wrath of a pop icon after ending his long-rumored romance with Madonna and dutifully returning to his ex-wife, Cynthia, in the wake of his steroid-use scandal.

The Material Girl is furious.

“Madge is pissed!” an insider revealed to the New York Daily News on Thursday. “Alex ran right home to Cynthia, and to Madonna, this is the ultimate dis.”

“But Alex’s handlers want to make sure he’s as far from Madonna as possible,” the spy blabbed. “He has enough negative publicity as it is.”

Tabloid tattles say Madge especially hurt that A-Roid turned to Cynthia for comfort in his time of need instead of her.

Ummm…did Madonna forget that she’s been spotted playing tonsil-hockey all over the pages of W Magazine with Brazilian model Jesus Luz?

Apparently not, and she’s got a good explanation for that.

“Madonna and A-Rod have been burning up the phones,” the Daily News spy claims, “and she keeps on insisting that Jesus is just a PR stunt. Alex says he understands, and now he’s asking her to understand that salvaging his career is his priority.”

Madonna isn’t giving up without a fight. The singing star is determined to get the steroid-poppin’ slugger back in her web.

“Madge is totally making a play to get him back….Madonna just wishes he had come to her. She has been the subject of negative press her whole career, and she wants to help him understand that this too shall pass.”

“She’s so desperate to see Alex, she’s plotting a way that they can sneak out to the Hamptons to work things out. She wants to have some alone time.”
