Madonna Blackface “Black Madonna” Theme Planned For “Hard Candy” Album
Paging Al Sharpton! Did you know The Material Girl almost created majah drama when she released last year’s charttopping Hard Candy album? Well, before choosing that title, Madonna considered christening the album Black Madonna — and even went as far as shooting a cover wearing blackface make-up with white eyes.
Tre’tacké! Thankfully, Madge smartened up before her releasing her offensive little minstrel show to consumers, realizing the idea was too controversial — not to mention stupid. Why would she even consider such a thing when she is the mother of two children of color? She’s never struck me as a racist — and still doesn’t — but blackface represents a very painful time in our nation’s history. There are some historical horrors that shouldn’t be digitally-remastered.
“I painted my face black, except for red lips and white eyes. It was a play on words,” Madonna reveals in a new commemorative issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands this week. “Have you ever heard of the Black Madonna? It has layers of meaning, and, for a minute, I thought it would be a fun title… Then I thought, ’25 per cent of the world might get this, probably less, it’s not worth it.’”
