Lucasfilm Starts Auditions for Han Solo Spin-Off Film—Here’s Who’s Up For the Role
The Star Wars news keeps coming like X-wing fighters at the Death Star, and I’m not complaining. Earlier this year, news broke that Disney is working on a spin-off film focusing on a young Han Solo, everyone’s favorite scoundrel. Now, it looks like every eligible actor in Hollywood is clamoring for a (first) shot at the role.
Of course, playing the iconic character Han Solo in his smuggling heyday doesn’t come without difficulties, especially since the role essentially belongs to the inimitable Harrison Ford. Lucasfilm has widened its scope considerably to find the exact man to take Han Solo’s pre-Luke days to the big screen. According to the Hollywood Reporter, more than 2,500 actors between 18 and 32 have expressed interest in the project, or “put themselves on tape” to audition.
The coveted age range is right there in the mid-twenties, but the studio is really looking for someone who “can be funny and charming as well as handle the expected action scenes.” As well as someone who can shoot a bounty hunter at point-blank range (and thus save his own hide).
Whoever eventually gets the role will be in excellent company. Reportedly, all of these A and B list actors are clamoring for the role: Dave Franco, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Miles Teller, Leo Howard, Tony Oller, Chandler Riggs, Hunter Parrish, Rami Malek, Landon Lioboiron, Ed Westwick, Tom Felton (in what would be an amazing crossover between two of my favorite things), Joshua Sasse, Logan Lerman, Jack Reynor, Colton Haynes, Max Theiriot, and my personal favorite, Ansel Elgort.
Phew. That’s a long list of hotties. But can any of them truly fill Harrison Ford’s shoes? His pilot seat in the Millennium Falcon?
The directors released a statement in July in an effort to make it clear that they love Solo just as much as we do, so they’re committed to making the film perfect, and a tribute to the Han we know and adore. They wrote:
“The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.
This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
Thankfully, they have plenty of time to devote to getting it right. Filming is set to begin in January 2017, over a year from now. The film will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and will be released on May 25, 2018. Crossing my fingers that the best man wins the role, and makes another generation fall in love with Han Solo the same way we (and Leia) did.
