Louisiana Justice Of The Peace Defends Right To Shun Interracial Couples
Calls are intensifying for the resignation of a White Justice of the Peace who refused to marry an interracial couple in Louisiana earlier this month. Keith Bardwell, a white justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish in southeastern Louisiana, wouldn’t issue a license to or preside over the nuptials for Beth Humphrey, who is White, and Terence McKay, who is Black.
The two were later married by another area justice of the peace in the same parrish, but their still appalled by Bardwell’s treatment and want his license revoked — the American Civil Liberties Union in Louisiana, the Center for Constitutional Rights and Justice, and the local chapter of the NAACP agree with them.
Bardwell, who’s held his post for more than 30 years, says interracial marriages are wrong, as any children born of such union will face adversity later in life because of the mixed parentage and its his right not to perform them. What do you think?
