Lana Del Rey has had a busy year, with a new album release and a “Trailblazer” award at Billboard’s Women in Music event. She continues to push the limits of her own signature aesthetic, and has taken on projects writing music for films like Big Eyes.
Now, Del Rey is giving her own spin to the Daniel Johnston song “Some Things Last A Long Time,” covering the song for an upcoming short film about the singer-songwriter.
Entitled Hi How Are You Daniel Johnston, the film will chronicle the story of an “aging musician coming to terms with the dreams of yesteryear” and will feature “an intimate interview between Daniel and his younger self addressing his most prolific and maddening era,” according to NME.
Lana Del Rey feels strongly about the project, pledging $10,000 to the film’s Kickstarter page to fund the film, and thus becoming its executive producer. Lana Del Rey has consistently drawn upon American history and Americana in her music, and she has strong emotional ties to Daniel Johnston’s music.
The film has been called “psychedelic,” about a musician encountering “nightmares, and characters from his past.”
