Kristen Stewart Calls Hollywood ‘Disgustingly Sexist’ In A New Interview

Kristen Stewart joins her fellow actresses in the public dissing of Hollywood and its sexist behavior. She is not alone in thinking that the film industry is sexist and as more women continue to speak out, perhaps something will actually change.

It is no surprise that the majority of films that are released feature men in the starring roles. The quality of roles for women have improved over the years, but there is still a lack in the type of roles that they can get.

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Stewart said, “Women inevitably have to work a little bit harder to be heard. Hollywood is disgustingly sexist. It’s crazy. It’s so offensive it’s crazy.”

Kristen Stewart began her career as the main actress in the Twilight films and her acting has been criticized, as a result, but her recent films have all been indie projects and she has proven to be one of the great young actresses around.

She most recently starred in Clouds Of Sils Maria with veteran French actress Juliette Binoche and also played Julianne Moore’s daughter in Moore’s Oscar-winning role of Still Alice.

Carey Mulligan is another actress who boldly spoke out against sexist Hollywood just a week ago and when two of the most prominent young actresses are doing it, you know there is a problem. Her comments included things like “In terms of the amount of interesting roles there are for women it’s obviously massively sexist.”

Of course, part of the reason that the quality of roles for women are not as frequent as that of their male counterparts is due to the lack of females behind the camera as well, a major problem that some women are working to change. Along with four other women, Rose Byrne recently started her own all-female production company that will work toward making more female-driven films.

Kristen Stewart does not get into any specifics regarding her personal situation, although the full interview is not available yet. The print version of the magazine will include the full interview and be released on April 30th. Her interview is the cover story on the June issue of the magazine.
