Today’s program is brought to you by the letters T&A….Elmo wasn’t complaining, but Katy Perry’s “Too Hot for Preschool” attire has gotten the sexy singer banned from Public Television. An unaired Sesame Street sketch featuring Katy singing in a revealing dress during has been pulled from the show.
Perry, 25, performed a cleaned-up version of her song “Hot N Cold” in a scene with Elmo that was supposed to air on New Year’s Eve, but producers for the longrunning children’s series scrapped the video Thursday after thousands of parents complained that Katy’s cleavage-baring top was inappropriate for a kids show.
The video, which has been viewed on YouTube.com by nearly 1.5 million people, has been receiving complaints from enraged parents since it debuted online on Monday. The controversy over Katy’s attire prompted producers not to air the song on the show, Sesame Street bosses said in a statement issued Thursday:
“Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube.”
Do you think Sesame Street made the right call in banning Katy’s cameo?
The 41st season of Sesame Street — featuring cameo appearances by Colin Farrell, Oprah Winfrey, and Will.i.am — debuts on Monday.
