Matt Lauer Grills Katie Couric On “Evening News” Exit Rumors During “TODAY Show” Reunion
Katie Couric returned to NBC’s The TODAY Show on Wednesday for her second on-air reunion with former co-host Matt Lauer.
During an interview to promote her latest book — The Best Advice I Ever Got — the newswoman was grilled by her old chum as Lauer ventured into uncomfortable territory about her rumored departure from the CBS Evening News. In 2006, Couric left TODAY after 15 years to make history as the first woman to anchor a major nightly news show. But with her contract scheduled to end in June, Katie has been the frequent target of reports that she’ll be leaving the ratings-challenged series, which regularly places last in the race against the NBC Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight, to host her own daytime talk show.
After all, the world’s going to need a new Queen of Talk now that Oprah’s hanging up her microphone.
“Have you heard any good rumors lately?” Lauer asked Couric, hinting at the headlines speculating Couric is moving on from CBS.
“I’m not sure, I’m really excited about the future. I love doing my job at the ‘CBS Evening News,’ I really do and I’m just in the middle of figuring it out,” she answered. “I’m going to call you as soon as I know,” she added, flashing a grin.
FYI, all proceeds from the sale of The Best Advice I Ever Got, a collection of essays with words of wisdom for young people, will benefit Scholarships America, an organization that helps send needy kids to college.
