Did you find it a bit odd that Kanye West’s critically-acclaimed Yeezus LP failed to snag a Grammy nod for Album of the Year? Well, you aren’t alone. The limited Grammy love has Kanye a bit puzzled too.
On the Phoenix stop of his Yeezus Tour, the “Bound 2″ rapper let the crowd know just how he felt about the lack of nominations for his last album. Entertainment Weekly, AV Club and Time all ranked Yeezus as their favorite album of the year. A fact Kanye was careful to mention in a nearly 20-minute stage rant on Tuesday night.
“I’m 36 years old and I have 21 Grammys. That’s the most Grammys of any 36-year-old. Out of all of those 21 Grammys, I’ve never won a Grammy against a white artist. Now let’s bring it back to Michael Jackson days when he couldn’t get his video played because he was considered to be urban.”
“So when the Grammy nominations come out and Yeezus is the top one or two album on every single list but only gets two nominations from the Grammys, what are they trying to say? Do they think that I wouldn’t notice? Do they think that, some way, that I don’t have the power to completely diminish all of their credibility at this moment?”
Kanye’s hardly pleased that Yeezus managed to nab a hattip for Best Rap Album, as well as a Best Rap Song nomination for “New Slaves.” And if this last little nugget is any indication, we shouldn’t expect to see him at the January ceremony in Los Angeles.
“People come to me and congratulate me on those two nominations. F**k those nominations! It’s only patronizing. Don’t patronize me.”
