Justin Bieber Marijuana Scandal Prompts Fan Wrist-Cutting Campaign (Wait…What?!)
Those damned Beliebers are at it again! The smokin’ (pun intended) scandal over Justin Bieber’s leaked pot photos has sparked a bizzare online campaign in which users are threatening self-harm over the singer’s alleged drug addiction.
Oh brother…
The web is buzzing about the snaps of Justin partying in a Newport Beach hotel room on Jan. 2 — apparently with joint in hand. The incident occurred just one day after a paparazzo was killed trying to photograph the singer’s Ferrari after calling his agency to tell them he’d seen the pop star puffing pot with teen rapper Lil Twist.
Posing as Justin’s “fans” — a group of Twitter users have posted disturbing images, tweets and videos with the hashtags “#CutForBieber” and “#CuttingForBieber.” Some fans posted fake pictures of themselves pretending to slash their wrists.
“Don’t make me do it,” one user tweeted with a picture of him taking a pair of scissors to his tongue.
“#Cutforbieber true fans go for the throat, so get on with it,” another wrote.
A backlash quickly arose, with anti-#CutForBieber users posting images of themselves cutting paper in response. Many users highlighted that cutting is a serious mental health issue and nothing to make light of.
“#CutForBieber is so disrespectful to the people who have gone through or are going through depression/self-harm,” one Tweeter wrote.
“Teenagers and adults in this world have a painful addiction to cutting, we should be helping not encouraging. This is sick,” another chimed in.
We suppose this should come as no surprise. Bieber fans are notoriously hormonal. After all, they’ve been known to chase the 18-year-old hunk through airports and stampede one another in hopes of getting close to him.
In 2010, Sydney Dalton made the mistake of publicly casting off her love for You-Know-Who in a YouTube video and wound up getting so many digital death threats that her name became Trending Topic on Twitter. Bielibers across the Web were so livid with Syd, the poor thing has found herself the target of online bullying, the tasteless hashtag #SlutneyDalton and a barrage of messages from Biebettes threatening to crack her over the head with their Justin Bieber posters.
