John Galliano Racist Rant Gets Shamed Designer Criminally-Charged
Fashion Mavens will see how much of a Nazi apologist John Galliano really is when the flamboyant designer faces a judge over the videotaped racist rant that got him ousted from his appointment as the brand’s creative director earlier this week.
On Wednesday, France officials confirmed that the former face of Christian Dior will stand trial after he was arrested last Friday for “allegedly” making anti-Semitic comments to a couple outside a Paris cafe. (That incident was separate from the one that was recorded…)
News that the criminal proceedings were to take place broke hours after the flamboyant designer apologized “unreservedly,” not for making the remarks, but for “causing any offense” during the alleged incident. He said in part:
“In all my work my inspiration has been to unite people of every race, creed, religion and sexuality by celebrating their cultural and ethnic diversity through fashion. That remains my guiding light.”
Uh-huh…We’re sure that’s very comforting to Holocaust survivors, their families, and all the other people of Jewish descent (including Oscar winner Natalie Portman) horribly hurt by these vile comments. Not!
Galliano — who was clearly intoxicated during the video — has reportedly checked into an American rehabilitation center at the urging of fashion industry pals, including Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.
“I only have myself to blame and I know that I must face up to my own failures and that I must work hard to gain people’s understanding and compassion. To start this process I am seeking help and all I can hope for in time is to address the personal failure which led to these circumstances and try and earn people’s forgiveness.”
Dior says it will present its new collection during Paris Fashion Week this Sunday, as scheduled.
