On Monday night’s Larry King Live, Jim Carrey pulled a Tom Cruise and went on the offensive against anti-depressants.
“You know at the risk of like opening up the whole Tom Cruise Prozac argument, you know, I don’t disagree in many ways,” the Entrevista star says. “I think Prozac and things like that are very valuable to people for short periods of time. But I believe if you’re on them for an extended period of time, you never get to the problem. You never get to see what the problem is, because everything is just kind of OK. And so, you don’t deal. And people deal when they get desperate.”

Jim treats his depression with “supplements.”

“Yes — well, it’s not — well, it is vitamins. But it’s also certain elements of the brain like Tyrosine and hydroxytryptophan that they’re treating depression with now. It is a natural substance that’s in your brain. Instead of being a Serotonin inhibitor, which just uses the serotonin you have and Prozac and things like that — it just uses the Serotonin you have and it doesn’t allow it go back into the receptor. It metabolizes your serotonin after a while and you have to keep taking more and more to feel good. This actually creates dopamine and creates serotonin. It’s a wonderful thing. It’s amazing. I’m going to talk a lot about it in the near future.”

hmm what he’s saying isn’t all that unreasonable, if at all. I agree with him that covering up your issues with anti depressants for an extended period of time may not be healthy, it may be discouraging to your recovery by not encouraging you to get to the root issues. However, some people have those ups and downs while having no real “reason” for it, and thats when drug intervention may not only be necessary, but the only recourse. If you’re sad and you have no reason to be, there may be something beyond your control. If he can boost his seratonin naturally, and that works for him, great. However, one should always be careful when condemning psychiatric therapy. People need to reach out in one way or another and saying anything that might discourage that is not good.

Drugn are not supposed to be an answer….even when they are prescribed, for mental issues. They are a coping tool that SOMETIMES is necessary WHILE ADMINISTERING PSYCHIATRIC HELP, but NEVER the SOLE answer.
