The term “Latino” was officially adopted in 1997 by the United States Government in the ethnonym “Hispanic or Latino”, which replaced the single term “Hispanic”: “Because regional usage of the terms differs — Hispanic is commonly used in the eastern portion of the United States, whereas Latino is commonly used in the western portion.”[7]

U.S. official use of the term “Hispanic” has its origins in the 1970 census. The Census Bureau attempted to identify all Hispanics by use of the following criteria in sampled sets:[8]

The term latino (feminine latina) in the Romance languages, such as Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, literally translates as “Latin”. (The cognate French term is latin, not latino.) Portuguese dictionaries define the demonym latino to refer to natives of Romance-speaking nations influenced by Roman civilization, and to the natives or inhabitants of ancient Latium (modern Lazio).[34][35] Italian dictionaries define the demonym latino as: the ancient Latins and Romans, and their language, Latin, as well as the neo-Latin nations.[36][37] The dictionary of the Real Academia Española defines ten meanings for latino, including the ancient peoples of Latium and the modern Romance-speaking European and American nations.[38] In these languages, latino, just like any other demonym, is by convention not capitalized.

An identity crisis is when an individual loses a sense of personal sameness and historical continuity. Mostly happens here in the US where everyone is labeled by the color of skin, and the languages spoken by the person. Where else would you change someones name like “Christopher Columbus”. He names was Cristobal Colon.

Learn to accept people for who they are we are all here on borrowed time and just make the best of your short life in this planet.

for those of you that are trying to judge the young lady. Take a real good look at yourselves and you might find out that you are a victims as well.

Alba has publicly denied making those comments. they were completely made up- most likely by someone who has a difficult time accepting the fact that a beautiful young actress like alba is proud of her heritage. she’s stated that she would never want to cut herself off from the only family she knows when referring to her mexican roots

I’m a mexican american girl, but i wasn’t raised speaking spanish, or immersed in the culture. But i still think of myself as a part mexican . this is the same with many of my friends from many cultures brought up in the same way. i think it’s really sad that some people can’t just accept, and embrace who they are, no matter what generation of american they are. yes i am an american, but i’m a MEXICAN-AMERICAN. you have to be proud of who you are, and where you’re from. i’m kind of dissapointed in ms. alba…

Latino is not a race but a geographical description of people from latin america. Latino is more a linguistic description. Just like most people from USA speak natively English but were not all English. Latino can be white,black, indian , or mix of any of these and each country has a different demographic depending on the history of it, so irritated you can be half latin half black it doesnt make sense

For Ms. Alba,
Mexicans have managed to preserve their culture in spite of adversity. (We don’t need you!)
With around six million speakers of an indigenous language, Mexico has the second largest portion of speakers of Native American languages of the Americas after Peru. Many Mexicans in America can speak Spanish, English and various original native tongues! Our culture and heritage has always been preserved and have existed for centuries in spite of having to hide it for years, for fear of the reprisals of discrimination. “Most” of us embrace who we are and still assimilate into American Culture. (Most of us have learned english and don’t expect to be catered to!!!)
Whether anyone out there wants to call a Mexican a so called “wetback” think about it….we have always resided here. A nice sized portion of what we now know as America was once called Mexico!!! Many of you had to cross oceans to get here and some of us a river…others blessed thru birth.
But America was built thru the labor of slaves and the backs of the many poor, educated and uneducated immigrants and has become rich and powerful because of them! There is no denying that!

If Jessica Alba wants to deny her heritage, she is ignorant! It has taken generations of peoples for her to come into existance. Although it is extremely appropriate and important to assimilate into the American Culture, your ancestry is precious no matter what your heritage. America is a melting pot of diversity in various cultures. Not one is better than another, we all have humanity in common!
Her biggotry and anyone elses for that matter, only demonstrates ignorance and a serious lack of education!!!

Well… I don t care what she say, she is not exactly a great actress, not smart and for sure not white, so why care about this trailer trash? I m mexican and couldn t care less about it, mean, if she says mexican women pop babies out it s because probably in her family that happen’s… after all his grandfather was not a lawyer, people who emigrates from Mexico is mostly real poor people, what can we expect of this girl? the poor grandpa is not guilty of being poor, ignorant, etc. what I m amazed that he took the spanish out but he didn t took the lack of class…
