  Fundamentally, what she said is not particularly defamatory and it is essentially correct. She is a victim of her heritage and upbringing. For the time her father was a fairly wise man and understood the racial issues.

  What Jessica is guilty of is a poorly constructed phrase for which virtually every celebrity save James Woods (who has an IQ of 180+) and there are worse fauz pas then this one.

  She still is a very attractive and exceptionally talented young woman.

  She made similar comments in a TV Guide interview years ago so what’s the big deal? Also, check the self hate. Why do Latino’s want to claim half White folks but not people like Zoe Saldana who are half Latin and half Black? Zoe and other actresses like her have spoken of being shunned by the Latin entertainment industry because they are lol- dark. Jessica Alba can claim to be what she wants. It’s her business. She is after all a mix of both races and then some.

  What she said hurts her more than it should hurt any other Latino. I feel sorry for her, she didn’t get to enjoy speaking Spanish to her grandparents she didnt get to hear family stories or Mexican history. As a 3rd generation Latina, like Jessica, those are the things i love the most and will be the memories i pass down to my kids. I also understand if she wants to “cut lose” . I think it would be a bad move but after all this is the land of the free. She can do what she likes and has not obligation to anyone but herself. The Latin community shouldn’t hate her.

  I am 1/2 white, 1/4 Mexican & 1/4 Spanish…….I know what it is like to not be accepted by any of your birth nationalities. I of all people never cast the race stone! I have always said “I am who I am” I don’t speak Spanish, but not because I don’t want to……I was never taught, this does not mean I don’t claim my Hispanic side…….I do think that everyone should speak English, after all this is the language of the USA……….No excuses….If you were in any other Country in the world, you would be expected to learn the language, so why do so many Hispanic’s think they don’t have too?   I’m an All American Mutt and proud of it. I’m Italian, Irish, English, and 15 generations back even American Indian. I have a rich and diverse cultural background from which I have been shaped and formed, but in the end I am American. Jessica’s grandfather was no different than any other immigrant of his day. Assimilation into American culture was tantamount to success. Some chose to keep family traditions, some chose to discard them. Guess what. That’s part of being American - having the right to choose. Good on Jessica for saying something publicly about the bigotry she’s endured for just being American.

  Her comments are insulting to people who are connected to their culture. if she hade made comments deragatory to the other side of her family, the white side, which she wouldn’t. A comment along the lines of “white people have a superiority complex. white people eat peanut butter and jelly and drink lots of beer” (i do not believe any of these statements, just the first things that popped into my head) But she did not make these comments because she feels a connection to her anglo-american side. She feels no love, no passion for her culture. She is empty because of it. And not just because I am mexican, but the mexican culture is incredibly rich and diverse. She is famous because she is stunning, and she is jaw dropping gorgeous because she is half latina. She is hot because she is exotic and stands out. By distancing herself from the very elements which have made her famous, she is demonstrating her own self hatred. Yes she IS AMERICAN but she is also representative of the importance of embracing your culture before it gets lost. Imagine how interesting it would have been if the Italians and Germans and Scots and Irish and Swedish that immigrated here had kept their language and culture alive instead of losing it in order to not stand out. I know alot of “irish-italians” that don’t speak a word of italian and don’t know an iota of irish history.

  I love Jessica Alba.shes the best… but I don’t agree with what she said. I saw her 2 weeks ago in the premier of fantastic 4 in London .I told her that she needs to learn Spanish and she said ‘ I don’t speak Spanish’. So I told her at least ‘un poquito’ a little.
  She smiled and said that she would try…
  She’s a very nice person and I just hate to think what she went thru when she was young.
  I’m mixed race, mother Spanish and my father is Moroccan and as I was growing up no race accepted me. Just like Jessica.
  Unlike her I speak Spanish and English. I’m involved in both cultures.
  I was brought up in London and I went to a Spanish school. I don’t speak my father’s language because he has never been around to teach me, but I don’t dis it.
  I understand how she feels. But the way she speaks about her Latin roots is wrong…. she should not say that Mexicans spread their seeds and women pop them out (what ever she said). If she doesn’t accept the fact that her parents are Mexican, then she should have left it there.
  When she talks the way she does about Mexicans she should realize that half of her family, if not all, are those people that she considers to spread their seeds and then pops them out.
  So she’s dissing her family.
  But I really don’t care anymore. I just now that Jessica is a very nice person, and I’m happy that I got the chance to meet her. I don’t now if she’s Latin or not, but what I now fore shore is that she’s human and like a human she should be loved and accepted. We should forget about peoples colour of skin, and just accept them for who they are, humans with feeling just like all of us.

  This person naming themself “beaner” and “wetback” is a racist, and offensive. I think it is interesting how she says that “My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, …” not one race huh…so then one of those races includes white but she still chooses to embrace that part of her. She can keep thinking all she wants that she has “cut loose” but it is still in her blood and I still consider her as a Latina, just not a very proud one and one other thing, I hope she continues to be invited to the ALMA awards so that maybe she can figure out that Latinos don’t give up on each other.

  “Latinos don’t give up on each other.” I agree. She’s a product of her grandfather, who was a product of the racism of his time. He wanted his family to have a better life, and you can’t fault him for that.

  My mother’s side of the family has been in CA for over a century and I have heard stories about what it was like in the 20s, 30s, etc. During the Depression my great aunt, an American citizen, was denied treatment at a Los Angeles hospital because she was of Mexican descent. Her appendix burst in front of the hopital and they just watched her die. My grandmother was 16 at the time and saw it happen. The hospital staff did nothing and nothing happened to them. Just like the Edith Rodriguez case at Killer King hospital.

  My Mexican-American grandfather (dad’s side) was born in Kansas in 1920 and lived there until he was eight. When you mention Kansas to him today, he just says “Nightriders.”

  This is the kind of thing Jessica’s grandfather was trying to run away from. The brutal discrimination of his time.

  Sorry but Jessica was born and RAISED in USA. Also, children tend to be influenced by their mother’s culture than the father’s if both parents are of different cultures. I am Puerto Rican and their father is Argentinian. Both my sons have been very influenced by my culture than their father’s. Today both boys considered themselves more Puerto Rican than Argentinians. So it isn’t necessarily about self hate but possibly about which culture the individual has had the most exposure.

I however look white and have green eyes, and people always ask me if i am white or half, this has been going on since i was a little kid. People would always look at my mom and dad and whisper. I never once have said i was white, I would never disown my race. U should never disown your race!

  Oddly I find I really don’t care. I guess the blessing or curse of not being anything other then American is that you don’t care what other people think about your background, culture, heritage etc.

  I’ve always wondered how long a race of people has to live somewhere before they are considered from there.

  If she doesn’t like the Hispanic/Mexican culture, then that’s her prerogative. She might have chose her words with greater care, but then again she may just not care. I know I don’t.
