Jennifer Aniston “Retard” Remark Sparks Outrage
America’s Sweetheart dropped the “R-Bomb” on Live! with Regis & Kelly Thursday.
Jennifer Aniston — who is currently making the media rounds to promote her latest romantic comedy, The Switch — was having a pleasant conversation with Regis Philbin and guest co-host Kristin Cruz from Los Angeles’ KOST 103.5 radio station about her ode to Barbra Streisand on the pages of the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar when the ugly slur came rolling off the beauty’s tongue:
“Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!” (Fast-Forward To 2:00)
The audience laughed, but few others did. In fact, Jennifer’s use of the outdated characterization is nothing to joke about, say disability advocates — who are chiding the former Friend for her poor choice of words.
“Sadly, people use the word pervasively even if they don’t realize it. People with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition. When people continue to use the R word, it’s hurtful,” says Kirsten Seckler, a spokeswoman for the Special Olympics. “Think before you speak especially when you’re making fun of yourself or others. We have a very passionate group of people advocating for change in their communities and schools to change the use of this word.”
