James Best, ‘Dukes Of Hazzard’ Sheriff And Prolific Actor, Dies At 88
James Best appeared in many films and television shows throughout his lengthy acting career, although he is probably known to most people for his role on The Dukes Of Hazzard.
He died on Monday night in hospice due to a brief illness of complications from pneumonia. He was living with his wife in Hickory, North Carolina after they moved from Orland, Florida in 2006.
In addition to his role as the sheriff constantly giving Bo and Duke a hard time in The Dukes Of Hazzard, he appeared in numerous films and TV shows. He was in several popular shows in the 1960s including The Andy Griffith Show, The Twilight Zone, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
James Best also worked with some of the greatest film actors of all time, notably Jimmy Stewart and Humphrey Bogart, appearing in Shenandoah and The Caine Mutiny, respectively.
Despite doing his most popular work many years ago, Best refused to officially retire from acting and he even took the lead role in a production of On Golden Pond for the Hickory Community Theater in 2014 opposite Hollywood veteran Norma Frank.
He had most recently appeared in Return Of The Killer Shrews and The Sweeter Side of Life, a TV movie. He was also set to appear in Old Soldiers, which is currently listed as being in pre-production.
He and his wife located to Hickory where they had a home on Lake Hickory, allowing him to enjoy his passion for fishing on the lake. Following his passing, it was announced that funeral donations could be made to the Humane Society.
Though his name is not known as well as other actors of his time, James Best appeared in 83 movies and 600 TV shows, including some of the biggest of his time.
