It’s Official: Mariah Carey Will Judge Next Season of “American Idol”

The worst kept secret in Hollywood is a secret no longer. After weeks of speculation — Fox made it official today: Singing superstar Mariah Carey will join the judging panel on the next season of American Idol.

Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly broke the news talent show fans have been waiting for to reporters on Monday:

“It’s the biggest recording artist than any of these shows have ever had. It’s an artist many of these contestants have tried to emulate. [The deal] concluded only hours ago. Not being the only game in town we need to keep things fresh.”

Word on the curb has it that Carey will earn about $17 million for one season on the coveted panel. The “Hero” singer took to Twitter to share the news with fans:

“It’s gonna be so much fun working on American Idol. As a singer-songwriter, I’m excited to help find and nurture new talent.”

Meanwhile, another judge still needs to be replaced. Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin has publicly lamented her not being even called up for the gig. She suspects with all of her experience, she should be the next judge. She’s even suggested other R&B legends, like Patti LaBelle.

Insiders suggest Carey’s longtime producer Randy Jackson will stay on as a judge with the reality show searching for another male judge to replace the exiting Steven Tyler.
