After a hailstorm of controversy over the lack of femme color in its lineup, Saturday Night Live (SNL) has snatched up the comedic musings of Sasheer Zamata. A graduate of the University of Virginia and trained at the Big Apple’s Upright Citizens Brigade, Zamata is the sketch comedy classic’s first Black female castmember since Maya Rudolph left the show in 2007.
The lack of diversity among female Black castmembers became a topic of debate when series star Kenan Thompson commented on the issue during an interview late last year. Zamata edged out 12 other comediennes screen-tested by SNL producer Lorne Michaels.
She’ll make her SNL debut Jan. 18.
