“Idol” Producer Nigel Lythgoe Lights Into “The Voice” and “The X Factor”
American Idol vs. The Voice vs. The X Factor: The Saga Continues.
Nigel Lythgoe, producer of Idol, is making headlines after slamming rival singing competitions, like Fox’s ratings-strapped The X Factor and The Voice on NBC.
Lythgoe told reporters Tuesday that he finds the latter talent shows “gimmicky” and suggests they find “stronger talent.”
Nigel is a fan of Voice coaches Adam Levine (Maroon 5) and Blake Shelton (top-selling country recording star, but his real problem is that Voice and X Factor are stealing Idol’s thunder.
“We’ve now got two major programs in The Voice and The X Factor against us,” he said, when asked why American Idol’s ratings have dwindled this year. “Whether people like them or dislike them, they’re still feeding from the same talent and it’s still going to dilute our audience.”
Ah, sounds like the age-old “too-many-singing-shows-not-enough-singers dilemma.”
Nigel didn’t miss the chance to baost that, despite its rivals, Idol is still one of the biggest TV shows in the world.
“After 11 years, I am thrilled with these ratings.”
