Hip-hopster-turned-Haitian presidential hopeful Wyclef Jean has been receiving death threats since announcing his candidacy for office last week.

In emails issued to the press, the “Gone ‘Till November” hitmaker claims he is currently hiding out in a secret location in his earthquake-ravaged homeland due to threats that have been made against his life. The star did not reveal any information about who may be behind the death threats, but Jean’s bid for the highest office in the impoverished land has made the musician a frequent target of criticism in recent weeks. Even Miss Haiti – who be the first beauty queen to represent the Caribbean nation in the Miss Universe pageant in more than 22 years — spoke out against Clef’s campaign this week.

“We have been getting threats since last night telling me if I know what’s good for me, I would get out [of] the country,” the former Fugees star revealed in an email to CNN on Tuesday.

“Wyclef has been repeatedly getting anonymous threats from people who are saying that he should think twice before running for the president,” Clef’s lawyer Berto Dorce added. “We cannot tell who are sending these threats, but the closer the announcement, the more threats Jean is getting.”

Any hope of Wyclef becoming the President of Haiti relies solely on the electoral officials and they’re preparing to announce whether he will be eligible to run alongside the plethora of candidates.
