“Guiding Light” Final Episode Airs Friday
After three-quarters of a century on the air, CBS dims the lights on America’s longest-running daytime drama on Friday.
Check out this encore video of 60 Minutes’ fond tribute to Guiding Light.
Guiding Light began 72 years ago as a Proctor & Gamble-sponsored NBC radio soap opera and premiered in 15-minute intervals on the tube on June 30, 1952. In 1968, Guiding Light expanded to 30 minutes, by 1977, it had become a full hour.
But this afternoon, the show will broadcast air its final hour, after more than 15,700 weekdays on radio and television. A revival of the classic television game show Let’s Make A Deal, hosted by Wayne Brady, will inherit the slot left vacant by Guiding Light beginning Oct. 5.
ABC News has a cool list of stars who got their start on the soap.
