Gabrielle Union has joined the cast of Lifetime’s possible Army Wives spinoff, The Hollywood Reporter said Monday.

The future Mrs. Dwyane Wade has been cast in a pivotal role in an “embedded pilot” that will air on the popular cable drama later this season.

The women’s cable network has been developing a Wives-inspired crime drama for monts. Now the project is moving to the next level, with Lifetime airing a special Wives episode near the end of the current fourth season that will likely set the set for the spinoff. ABC tried a similar method with Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Private Practice and Gossip Girl used an embedded pilot to introduce the characters that would have played central roles in The CW’s proposed ’80s-themed companion series.

In the forthcoming episode, Wives regular Pamela Moran (Brigid Brannagh) returns to her career as a police officer and is promoted to a detective with the Atlanta Police Department. Union will play her partner, Detective Gina Holt.
