“Fifty Shades of Grey” Cast Trouble: Is Dakota Johnson Out Too?
More trouble for the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey: Could this film be ovah before production even begins?
First, Charlie Hunnam dropped out of the hotly-sought role of Christian Grey. Now, the Rumor Mil is abuzz with dish that the media attention surrounding the coveted part of Anastasia “Ana” Steele might be “too much” for well-bred celebuspawn Dakota Johnson.
E! News says Johnson, the 23-year-old daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, has been taken aback by the notoriety surrounding her casting as Ana, a naive college girl who finds herself wrapped up in a world of BDSM sex with the wealthy and much older Christian.
“Dakota is having a very hard time dealing with all the press. When she first got the role, it was way too much for her…It’s been tough.”
The fan backlash can’t have been easy either. Outraged by the appointment of dark horses Hunnam and Johnson, nearly 100,000 fans of the erotic bestseller banded together and formed a petition in hopes of forcing Universal Pictures to recast Fifty Shades of Grey.
On Saturday, the studio announced that Hunnam was exiting the project. While the official reason offered is “scheduling,” there’s all sort of whispers going around about the real reason Charlie walked away from the part of Christian.
Deadline speculated that it was the role’s excessive nudity was to blame, while E! once again blames the intense media attention surrounding the film.
“More than anything he hates attention and being in Fifty Shades of Grey would force him to do lots of media. That’s really not his thing. Charlie doesn’t want to be massively famous. Plus, he hates conforming and being told what to do. This role would force him to have to be something he is not.”
