Fantasia in a Pickle After Making Candid Remarks Against Gay Marriage
The new year just started and, but Fantasia Barrino is wasting no time doing the only thing she does better than belting out R&B ballads: In case you were wondering, that would be stirring up
controversy!
The ex-American Idol has waded into some very hot water — and been labeled a gay basher to boot — after making some scathing remarks about gay marriage on her Instagram profile. Fanny wrote:
“I Rise ABOVE IT ALL!!! THE WORLD IS GONE MAD. KIDS, THE GOVERNMENT THE church House… Everybody Trying!!!!!!!” the singer wrote on an Instagram post (via goodasyou.org). “Its a lot that going on that the Bible speaks about we should Not be doing. Weed legal in some places, Gay Marriage Legal BUT YET IM JUDGED!!! I’m not doing Nothing for you… My Life!!!!”
Well, in news that should surprise absolutely no one, Barrino received a hail storm of criticism after going public with her thoughts. In a bid to do damage control, both Fantasia and her rep released statements clarifying her comments and decrying allegations that she’s an opponent to the LGBT community.
“Comments made by Ms. Barrino through her Instagram account were recently taken far out of context,” read the publicist’s statement. “Ms. Barrino is not now, nor has she ever been an opponent of the LGBT community. She has supported and performed at numerous events that are sponsored by the LGBT community. Whether it’s through a live performance or placement on social media, Ms. Barrino uses every opportunity to reach out and connect with her fans, all of her fans.”
Barrino also posted a clarifying statement herself:
“I, Fantasia Monique Barrino, don’t judge anyone because I don’t want to be judged. The gay community is one of my largest supporters. I support the gay community as they support me. Bloggers please stop misrepresenting the facts.”
Fanny is no stranger to bad press. The “Truth Is” hitmaker got a heaping helping of it when she had an affair with married cellphone salesman Antwaun Cook, a father of two who the singer has been romantically linked to since 2009.
During the turbulent romance, Barrino attempted suicide and was sued for “Alienation of Affection” by Cook’s ex-wife, Paula. Mrs. Cook claimed Barrino aided in the destruction of her marriage by knowingly engaging in extramarital sexy times with her husband.
A North Carolina jurist ruled that Antwaun and Paula were separated when he and Fantasia began dating in the Summer of 2009. The decision made it impossible for the soon-to-be ex Mrs. Cook to go after what was left of Fanny’s millions, per a vintage Southern law that permits jilted spouses to sue their partner’s lover.
