Natalie Cole’s fans want to give her a kidney.
Dozens of viewers wrote in offering to be tested as possible donors when the jazz legend appeared as a guest on CNN’s Larry King Live on Tuesday night.
“I always felt that it was just so strange to solicit to strangers for a kidney. But people are really great. There are some great human beings out there. That’s all I can say,” Natalie told Larry.
The 59-year-old singer has been diagnosed with kidney failure. Without a donor kidney, she will be on dialysis for the rest of her life.
Her 31-year-old son, Robert, was checked out as a possible donor but was ruled out after doctors discovered he isn’t a suitable candidate for organ donation.
“It’s more than blood. It’s not just if you’re B negative. And I’m B positive. Your general health has to be really, really good. There are some other requirements that they have…..”
“In other words, my son had some blood pressure issues. And they felt that that was a red flag. To a regular doctor who you see, let’s say, once every couple of months, that’s not a big deal, if your pressure is at, say, 135/80. But to the transplant people, that’s a big deal.”
Natalie Cole was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in February 2008. Her kidneys failed after treatment and she has since been seeking a donor.
