Fans Launch Petition in Protest of “Fifty Shades of Grey” Casting
The Fifty Shades of Grey casting backlash is in full swing.
The Labor Day Weekend brought news that Dakota Johnson — the 23-year-old celebuspawn of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson — will star alongside British actor Charlie Hunnam, 33, in the film adaptation of EL James’ erotic bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey.
The entire internet has something to say about it; sparking widespread debate on Facebook and Twitter about whether the right casting choices have been made. There’s been positive reception to the casting choices, of course, but the overwhelming response from fans has been pretty negative.
Popular picks for the lead roles were White Collar’s Matt Bomer as billionaire heartthrob Christian Grey and Gilmore Girls’ star Alexis Bledel in the role of naive college girl Anastasia Steel.
One Facebook chirped:
“Yet another big mistake. She (Dakota) is so not right for Ana. Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel were my picks. Did the casting people even read the books??!!??”
Another Grey fanatic added:
“Not a good choice!! She is not Ana!!”
One passionate fan, identified only as “@DonTouchMyPatch,” has taken the grievance a step further, gaining international attention with a Change.org petition opting to have Hunnam and Johnson fired. The fan makes an impassioned plea that has already garnered over 15,000 signatures since its creation Tuesday:
“We want Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele on (sic) 50 Shades…Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE And I read the whole trilogy and I can assure that Matt is the perfect actor for this movie and Alexis too.”
Convincing, eh? But those close to the production have stood up for the casting of the leads. Dana Brunetti, one of the film’s producers, is leading that charging, tweeting this week:
“There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc. So if your favorite wasn’t cast, then it is most likely due to something on that list. Keep that in mind while hating and keep perspective.”
Fifty Shades of Grey hits cinemas next year.
