Count Elisabeth Hasselbeck among the daytime TV fans tossing their remotes in protest of Rosie O’Donnell’s alleged “done deal” to return to The View.
ABC has yet to officially confirm that Rosie will be joining Whoopi Goldberg as part of the morning show’s revamped cast, but according to entertainment industry insiders, negotiations have wrapped up and producers are hoping to add a Latina and a conservative to round out the Season 18 panel.
The comedienne was a co-host/moderator between 2006 and 2007, during the program’s 10th season. Ro’s controversial tenure included a number of controversies; an especially nasty feud with Donald Trump springs to mind. The most uncomfortable Rosie moment came, however, when Hasselbeck and O’Donnell butted heads in a now infamous on-air fight. The war of words started out as a spirited debate over the war in Iraq but quickly turned into a shouting match filled with personal vitriol. O’Donnell never returned following the tense exchange.
Ah — which brings us to today’s scoop. Hasselbeck left The View last year for greener (Read: Ultra-conservative) pastures at the Fox News Network. The Football Wife, who is currently on a “staycation” with her kids, didn’t mince words when discussing Rosie’s possible (Read: Very likely) return to her old stomping ground.
Elisabeth called into Fox & Friends Wednesday morning, shattering Rosie’s View:
“What could ruin a vacation more than to hear news like this? Talk about not securing the border. Here comes to The View the very woman who spit in the face of our military, spit in the face of her own network and really in the face of a person who stood by her and had civilized debates for the time that she was there.”
Good to know you don’t hold a grudge, Lis.
Like a well-connected sleuth, Hasselbeck told her Fox & Friends colleagues that O’Donnell’s return to The View has been “in the works for a long time.”
“Go back to the reunion show for Barbara, how odd is this? When you have a woman who again insinuated that our own troops are terrorists in Iraq at the time, [who] left the show…while still at the end of her contract – to have such ease the day of Barbara’s goodbye show was shocking to me. She walked around with a lot of control [at the reunion show] and when I got a chance to talk with her, Rosie herself told me on set while we were mic’d up that she produced the reunion show to have everybody together and it was her idea. Would you think that the woman who left the way that she did would be producing Barbara Walters’ goodbye show? Now here’s the shocker, it was actually her ‘Hello’ show.”
Hasselbeck also had this advice for O’Donnell:
“I don’t think it would be wise for Rosie O’Donnell to challenge Whoopi Goldberg on anything.”
Do you think Rosie’s return to The View will equal ratings gold?
