“If you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it.” Are people still saying that? We really should try to stay more current.
Oh well, at any rate, the expression cannot be applied to Donnie Wahlberg. The ex-boy bander (New Kids on the Block, for those of you born after the Reagan era) proposed to his girlfriend, ex-Playboy centerfold Jenny McCarthy, over the weekend.
Jenny sported a real Zsa Zsa diamond ring as she spilled the beans on the surprise proposal (Is there any other kind?) on The View Wednesday, commissioning cheers from the audience and a bear-hug from show boss Barbara Walters. The 41-year-old McCarthy tap-danced around the infamous “ugly cry” as she recounted how the Blue Bloods star recruited her son Evan, 11, for the task of asking for her hand.
It didn’t take long for McCarthy to figure out that something was up.
“This weekend I was sitting with Donnie … and he went into the other room and out came Evan with a card that said ‘Will’ and he handed it to me. Then Evan ran away and Evan came in with a card that said ‘You.’ … I just started crying and then Evan came back into the room with the word ‘Marry’ — but spelled wrong. The last time, Donnie came out with Evan and Donnie’s shirt said ‘Me’ … and he got down on his knee.”
Somewhat an odd pairing, the outspoken McCarthy and the low-key Wahlberg raised eyebrows when they first started dating last summer. Jenny — who was in a longterm romance with comedic actor Jim Carrey — says the connection with Donnie was instant. She was especially charmed by how well her new boyfriend bonded with Evan, who is autistic.
“They caught frogs together. Evan was like, ‘See you later mom. We’re gonna catch frogs,’ and that was that.”
This will be the second marriage for the future newlyweds. Wahlberg and ex-wife Kim Fey divorced in 2008. McCarthy split from director John Asher in 2005.
