Oscar-nominated actress Diane Lane has accepted the role of Clark Kent’s adoptive mother Martha Kent in the upcoming Superman reboot, according to director Zack Synder. The new gig sees the Unfaithful actress tackling a role Eva Marie Saint in the 2006 Superman flick, Superman Returns.

Lane, 46, is the first star to join the cast of Superman: Man of Steel since Henry Cavill, 27, (Photographed Above…) landed the role of Clark/Superman last month.

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination,” according to Synder.

Kevin Costner is currently a “person of interest” to play Clark’s dad Jonathan Kent, while Viggo Mortensen is being considered for the villainous role of General Zod, the lensman added.

Sit Tight, Cinema Stans: Man of Steel opens in theaters in Dec. 2012.
