At just 64-years young, Diana Nyad, has completed a dream that she has dreamed for 35 years.
On four different occasions, Diana had attempted to make the 103-mile swim from Cuba to Key West, Florida and had failed. BUt this afternoon, Nyad completed the 53 hour swim and landed on the shores of Smathers Beach in the Florida Keys. Nyad becomes the first swimmer to complete the journey without flippers and without a shark cage.
Nyad had been sidelined in her previous attempts, one of those reasons, the massive jellyfish that she had encountered. She did wear a protective mask on her face to help with the stinging, while she completed her swimming.
Before she began her journey on Saturday, Nyad had stated this would be her last attempt, even if she failed. Today, as she dragged her exhausted body up onto the beach in Key West, she proudly hoisted her fist in the air and said “don’t ever give up on your dreams.”
