As a third season of FOX’s X Factor winds down, series producer Simon Cowell decided this is the time t confirm the rumors that mentor Demi Lovato will be leaving the show at season’s end.
No need to page Olivia Pope. There’s no scandal here. (At least, not that we’ve heard about…) Demi just wants to return to her musical roots and Simon’s behind her 100% percent.
In three seasons of the struggling singing series, Lovato was the only singer to return for a second season as a mentor; Season One mentors Paul Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and Season Two’s Britney Spears served only one-season mentorships. Interestingly enough, the 21-year-old failed to send a member of her group to the finals in either season.
Still, Cowell insists that the exit move was mapped out from the very beginning.
“It was two seasons and we’ve had great fun, but she has to tour next year. We’ve had fun working together…I always knew she wasn’t coming back because she’s touring, so I knew that.”
Lovato also shared her plans for the next year. (Hint: There could be a new album involved.)
“I started the show being a singer and a musician and so I’m going to go back to that. It’s been really great, but I’m so excited for 2014. I’m going to dedicate it completely and entirely to music — touring and making a new album. Possibly releasing one.”
