My, how the funny have fallen…
Former Chappelle’s Show star Dave Chappelle left an audience with puzzled looks instead of side-splitting laughter during an hour-long charity set in Miami over the weekend — just a month after the guy who famously walked away from a multimillion-dollar deal with Comedy Central delivered a crowd-rousing impromptu performance in The Big Apple.
Apparently, during his “performance,” Chappelle had some important text messages that simply couldn’t wait to be answered. Needlessly to say, this little misstep resulted in the former funnyguy being booed and heckled offstage.
“This Dave Chappelle set is bizarre,” CNN’s Roland S. Martin Tweeted from former NBA star Alonzo Mourning’s Zo’s Summer Groove fundraiser on Friday night.
“He’s spent more time going back & forth with one audience member, & pretty much stopped telling jokes,” Martin continued. “One woman just yelled, ‘Can you tell a joke so we can enjoy ourselves!’ He got texted four times during his show and actually checked them. Then Dave started talking to me, asking if I was putting this on CNN. Yes, from the stage! He’s been on stage 46 minutes & told one joke.”
While Chappelle’s reps have yet to comment on the stand-up snafu, but Roland talked to a snitch in the comic’s camp who blames the show snafu on the hecklers. Perhaps not suprisingly, Dave hates being taunted (Go Figure…) and when he started getting heckled on stage he wasn’t able to regain his footing. Eventually, the whole affair turned into a “test of wills,” according to Martin, who said Dave kept “staring at the crowd and sighing.”
