After 20 years of what onlookers could only describe as wedded bliss (which is as rare as unicorns in the City of Angels), Cuba Gooding Jr. and his wife Sara Kapfer are boarding the train to Splitsville.
The high school sweethearts, who wed in 1994, filed for legal separation this week, offering no details on their sudden bust-up. Sara has requested joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s minor children, Mason, 17, and Piper, 9. The soon-to-be exes are also parents to a son, Spencer, 20.
Just last year, Cuba, who won the Best Supporting Actor gong for 1996’s Jerry McGuire, gushed to the hosts of The View about his enduring and endearing romance with Kapfer:
“[She’s been] the high-school girl, the college girl, the newlywed and the mother…and I’ve fallen in love with every one.”
But the Oscar winner hinted that a bi-coastal separation had put a strain on the longtime union. His role in the Broadway show The Trip to Bountiful kept him away from his Los Angeles-based family for months.
“When [I] do films, I can still fly them in or fly home to see them. But I knew this [Broadway] commitment meant that I would be in New York City for a long time, so it’s a bit of a pull to keep the household together.”
