Police in Nashville have confirmed that former NFL star Steve McNair was the victim of a murder-suicide.

McNair, a former MVP who lead the Tennessee Titans to victory in the 2000 Super Bowl, was shot dead by his 20-year-old mistress Sahel Kazemi. The gun was found underneath Kazemi, who began having an affair with the one-time quarterback after the two met at a local Dave & Buster’s restaurant where the young woman was a waitress.

Relatives of Kazemi say McNair purchased a Cadillac Escalade for Sahel’s 20th birthday in May, and had promised his lover that he was in the process of divorcing his wife of 13 years, Mechelle McNair.

They believe the father of four was asleep on a sofa in a condo he rented with another man when Kazemi shot him in the head on July 4. She then apparently shot him twice in the chest before shooting him again in the head. She then turned the gun on herself.

Interviews with friends revealed that the unemployed Sahel Kazemi was making payments on two cars, her rent was doubling, and she suspected McNair was having a second affair with another young woman, The AP wrote this afternoon.

City coroner Dr. Feng Li based his opinion on the crime-scene investigation, police interviews, the autopsy results and lab studies.

“I’ll say greater than 95 percent,” Dr. Feng Li told CNN on Wednesday. “It’s almost an assured thing. We have to be convinced otherwise.”
