MTV is releasing a collection of promos they’re calling “VMA Side Story” to promote the 26th Annual Video Music Awards’ return to its roots in New York on Sunday, Sept. 13. Each ad features a contemporary take on the performance of “Tonight” from the movie musical West Side Story.

Here’s the first promo, which features Cobra Starship and Leighton Meester working their musical magic on the subway platform.
