Christina Applegate Double Mastectomy Confirmed (”Good Morning America” Interview)

Christina Applegate has made the painful decision to have both of her breasts removed, the Samantha Who? actress said in an interview wtih Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts on Tuesday. The admission confirms rumors of a double mastectomy that first emerged in the National Enquirer two weeks ago.

“After looking at all the treatment plans available to me… I had a prophylactic double mastectomy,” says Christina, whose mother also battled breast cancer. Nancy Priddy had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery when Christina was 7. As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, Christina has the breast cancer gene, BRCA1, which would have made a reoccurence of the disease inevitable if she chose to keep her breasts.
“I didn’t want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything. I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me,” she explains. “This was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one.”
“Sometimes I cry. Sometimes I scream,” she revealed. “It’s all part of healing… it’s okay to cry, it’s okay to fall on the ground and just scream if you want to.”
Christina is now “100% breast cancer free” and will have reconstructive surgery over the next eight months to rebuild her breasts. She’s very excited about that. “I’m going to have cute boobs until I’m 90,” Christina joked. “I’m going to have the best boobs in the nursing home.”
