This is one blind item that the blogosphere hit right on the head. Country singer Chely Wright (AKA Who?) will come out as a lesbian on this week’s cover of PEOPLE Magazine. The moderately-successful star — who once bedded Brad Paisley — admits to the celebrity weekly that she has been hiding her homosexuality for years for fear that the bombshell would torpedo her music career.
“There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality. I wasn’t going to be the first. I hid everything for my music.”
“When I realized he was wanting forever with me…I could see the damage I was doing to him, and I cut him off completely, cold turkey,” Wright says of her romance with Paisley — who was unaware of her sexuality. He went on to marry actress Kimberly Williams.
Now 39, Chely is ready to admit to the world that she is a lesbian — conveniently just days before the release of her memoir, Like Me. Also hitting stores this week is her new album, Lifted off the Ground.
Wright will dish more dirt on her life as a closeted lesbian with an appearance on The TODAY Show on Wednesday.
