It’s no Mr. & Mrs. Smith!
Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp have bombed at the box office in their first ever film together. Is Chelsea Handler too blame?
Hollywood’s hottest on-screen couple failed to grab the top spot at the US box office last weekend. The Tourist — a romantic-thriller which features Depp and Jolie as lovers swept up in an asassination plot — took in less than $20 million in its opening weekend. The film even fell to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which claimed the top spot.
The flop has prompted some Hollywood executives to wonder what role, if any, Chelsea Handler’s recent standup assassination of Angie – in which the Brotha Lova called the star a “homewrecker” and a “cunt” in front of Garden State audience one week before the film’s release — many have had on the disappointing reception for The Tourist.
“It’s not that Chelsea is the most powerful movie critic the world has ever known, it’s that she reminded all of America what Angelina had done all over again. Chelsea picked an ugly scab off a wound that Angelina had worked so hard to heal with her humanitarian work,” says one movie exec. “What woman in America is going to pay money to see Angelina ruin one man’s life on-screen when we all saw her [ruin Jen's marriage] for free in real life?”
Don’t expect any Christmas miracles for The Tourist: Film industry analysts predict that The Tourist will pulled from US cinemas in a matter of weeks. Sony hopes the drama will performs better overseas.
