3

Channing Tatum has jumped to the top of the list of actors being courted for a role in Jonah Hill’s upcoming motion picture adaptation of 21 Jump Street, the ’80s cop drama that featured Johnny Depp and Holly Robinson Peete (Ugh) as babyfaced rookie officers battling some of the most pivotal social issues plaguing Gen Xers.

The Step Up hunk is reportedly in negotiations to join Hill as one of a group of youthful police officers who go undercover at a local high school. Emma Stone, of Easy A fame, has previously been rumored for the project.

The film will begin shooting early next year ahead of a March 16, 2012 release date. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller will direct.

The original 21 Jump Street, created by recently-departed screenwriter Stephen J. Cannell, premiered in 1987 and ran for five seasons on FOX.

Depp has to be in this. It won’t be 21 Jump street without Hansen. :)
