Celebrities and the Catwalk: 8 Celebs Who Owned the Runway
After Beth Ditto’s unforgettable appearance at the Marc Jacobs Spring 2016 fashion show at New York Fashion Week, celebrities on the runway has been on our minds. Such iconic moments come to memory—from Madonna’s appearance at Jean Paul Gaultier, to Gaga smoking a cigarette and owning the runway at Mugler.
While designers usually like to keep it about the clothes, show-stopping performers, celebrity front-rowers and putting together a complete spectacle is all a part of the magic—and these eight particular celebrities played a large role in some of the most memorable fashion shows in history. As London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks approach, we take a look at some cool runway moments and prepare ourselves for what’s to come next!
1. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson at Valentino, Spring/Summer 2015
As they began production of the highly anticipated Zoolander 2, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson drummed up even more publicity with their appearance at Valentino’s haute couture show. Valentino, which is known for their ethereal clothes and intricate embroidery, switched it up with the appearance of the two comedic actors, providing light humor and showing that fashion should not always be taken so seriously.
2. Lady Gaga at Mugler, Fall/Winter 2011
At Nicola Formichetti’s debut show as creative director of Mugler, it wasn’t surprising to see an appearance from his former styling client Lady Gaga. What did surprise us was the dark dominatrix style of Formichetti’s designs, accessorized perfectly by Gaga’s dramatic presence as she smoked seductively from a cigarette. This was definitely a debut show to remember, and Gaga played a pivotal role in that.
3. Madonna at Jean Paul Gaultier, Spring/Summer 1993
Madonna bared her bare breasts in one of the most iconic and controversial fashion shows to date. At Madonna’s prime she was known for her expressiveness. As the release of her coffee table book ‘Sex’ neared, Madonna’s controversial style was at an all time high, and this appearance at JPG sealed the deal.
4. Beth Ditto at Marc Jacobs, Spring/Summer 2016
This is the latest in iconic celeb runway appearances, as Beth Ditto hit the runway at the extravagant Marc Jacobs show this season. While the other models bared similar looks from their hair to make up, Beth Ditto stood out dramatically in all white and was a much-needed highlight to the already eccentric collection.
5. Victoria Beckham at Maria Grachvogel, Fall/Winter 2000
Before delving into the world of designing, Victoria Beckham took her hand at modeling, including this runway show in 2000.
6. Rihanna at Dsquared2, Spring/Summer 2008
She is now an international fashion icon, and this runway moment was just the beginning of Rihanna’s fashion takeover.
7. Gary Oldman at Prada, Fall/Winter 2012
The appearance of Gary Oldman, alongside Jamie Bell, Adrien Brody and Garrett Hudland at the Prada Fall/Winter 2012 was definitely a nice surprise, and created a lasting impression that is rarely executed in menswear.
