CBS is speaking out on the arrest of Robert Halderman, a 48 Hours producer arrested for allegedly trying to blackmail Late Show host David Letterman for $2 million.

Halderman has been charged with attempted grand larceny after allegedly giving the comedian an ultimatum to ante up or risk having his affairs with female Late Show employees made public. Halderman, the live-in lover of Letterman’s ex-assistant Stephanie Birkett, was arrested outside CBS Studios in Manhattan on Thursday. If convicted, he faces 9-22 years behind bars.

“CBS was made aware of an ongoing police investigation involving David Letterman and an employee at ’48 Hours’ who was subsequently arrested yesterday on charges of attempted grand larceny in the first degree,” a rep for the network said in a statement early Friday. “CBS is cooperating fully with the authorities and the employee has been suspended pending the results of the investigation. Mr. Letterman addressed the issue during the show’s broadcast last night, and we believe his comments speak for themselves.”
