U2 and Jay-Z performed “Sunday Bloody Sunday” during a concert in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany on Thursday. U2 performed a free concert in collaboration with MTV Europe Music Awards to help the city celebrate 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
YouTube’s webcast of U2’s live concert from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California last Sunday was watched by nearly 10 million people, the video site’s largest streaming event ever.
The full 2 1/2-hour concert is available on YouTube. The rebroadcast video has been watched by more than 1.1 million viewers.
Chris Maxcy, head of music partnerships at YouTube, called the event “a big win” for the site.
U2 will perform a free concert to help the city celebrate 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, MTV announced on Tuesday evening.
The Irish rockers will perform in front of the Brandenburg Gate on Nov. 5 during the network’s Europe Music Awards, hosted by Katy Perry. The band’s performance will beamed via satellite to the awards ceremony at Berlin’s nearby O2 World Arena.
The Berlin Wall fell Nov. 9, 1989, ending almost 30 years of separation between east and west. In a statement Tuesday, U2 manager Paul McGuinness said it would be exciting to be in Berlin, “20 years almost to the day since the wall came down.”
U2’s 1991 album Achtung Baby was partly inspired by the band’s stay in the city.
U2 and YouTube have teamed up to broadcast a live stream of the band’s concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, this weekend. Any fan wishing to tune in from the 16 countries supported will be able to do so for free this Sunday, Oct. 25.
This is YouTube’s second attempt at live-streaming concerts. In August, the video-sharing site aired portions of the Outside Lands music festival in San Francisco.
Portions of the stream will be archived and available for streaming after the event.
