Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) haven’t been called “Veneral Diseases” (or VD) since Jheri Curls and Adidas were considered style stapes, but the envelope-pushing Powers-That-Be at The CW are using the outdated medical phrase in a controversial ad campaign promoting the mid-season premiere of its dark primetime drama, The Vampire Diaries.

On Wednesday, The CW picked up two of its freshman series for a full season: Vampire Diaries, the network’s top-rated series this fall; and the revamped Melrose Place, which is expected to draw a larger audience when original series star Heather Locklear returns for a multi-episode guest arc next month.
