Heath Ledger Oscar Nomination On First Anniversary Of Death

Heath Ledger has received a posthumous Oscar nomination on the first anniversary of his death.

The late star will battle Josh Brolin (Milk), Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder); Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt) and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) for the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his role as “The Joker” in 2008’s Summer blockbuster The Dark Knight. He won a Golden Globe for his performannce earlier this month.

Heath, 28, died of a prescription drug overdose at his NYC apartment on January 22, 2008.

Heath Ledger was posthumously honored for his portrayal of the demented Joker in the Summer 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight at the 2009 Golden Globe Awards.

The actor, who died of an overdose in January 2008, won the trophy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama during Sunday night’s ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan accepted the award for Heath. “On behalf of all of us who worked with Heath on Dark Knight, I accept this with mix of sadness and incredible pride,” Nolan said. “He will be eternally missed but he will never be forgotten.”

“We are overjoyed for him,” Heath’s dad, Kim Ledger, told PEOPLE on Sunday. “It’s wonderful.”

Late actor Heath Ledger deserves an Academy Award for his performance as The Joker in this year’s Batman sequel, The Dark Knight, Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers wrote on Thursday.

“I can only speak superlatives of Heath, who is mad-crazy-blazing brilliant as the Joker,” Peter says.

“It’s typical of Heath’s total commitment to films as diverse as Brokeback Mountain and I’m Not There that he does nothing out of vanity or the need to be liked. Heath’s Joker has no grey areas — he’s all rampaging id. He creates a Joker for the ages. If there’s a movement to get him the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch won for 1976’s Network, sign me up.”

The end credits of the “Batman Begins” sequel include a farewell note to Heath: “In memory of our friends Heath Ledger & Conway Wickliffe,” reads the tribute included in the credits.
