American Idol 5 winner Taylor Hicks and the cast of the Broadway production of Grease performed Taylor’s number from the show, “Beauty School Dropout,” on Friday’s Live with Regis & Kelly. Taylor will star as “Teen Angel” in the hit musical until September.

Taylor Hicks is headed for the Great White Way. The grey-haired crooner, who won the fifth season of American Idol, will join the Broadway cast of Grease on June 6, The Associated Press reports.

Taylor, who was dropped from the J Records roster earlier this year due to poor album sales, is set to play Teen Angel in the musical.

With Clay Aiken (Season 2), Fantasia Barrino (Season 3), and now Taylor all having hit the stage in New York City’s famed Theater District, Broadway is quickly becoming Idol’s new dumping ground.

Theater fans can expect an imaginitive approach to the role, as Taylor says he plans to add “soulful flavor” to his performance of “Beauty School Dropout.”

“It’s a big number, and, you know, I’ve made some pretty grand entrances before. … And this one is probably the grandest entrance I’ve made in my career,” Taylor says.

In December, American Idol Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard was released from label home J Records after just three albums. Now soulful Season Five winner Taylor Hicks has been dumped by the prestigious label.

The Hollywood Insider reports:

“Taylor is going to record his next album on his own,” said a label rep. “He is no longer on the J Records roster.”

Taylor Hicks, winner of last season’s American Idol has agreed to settle a lawsuit he’s filed against a Nashville producer who apparently sold his songs he’d recorded prior to his American Idol victory.

Court documents filed Tuesday in a federal court explain Hicks now owns all the rights to the master recordings of his songs, which have been for sale on iTunes recently.

In exchange for the ownership rights, Hicks agreed with producer William Smith not to pursue any further legal action against him.
