A new poll of American Idol fanatics has revealed that viewers of the nation’s No. 1 television talent competition would abandon the popular show if acid-tongued Brit Simon Cowell were no longer on the judge’s panel.
Earlier this year, Simon announced that he is contemplating leaving the show when his contract ends in 2010, he has also said he is “keeping the door open” to return.
In a new poll conducted by AOL Television, nearly half of Idol viewers said they would no longer watch the program if Simon left the show.

With the eighth season of American Idol down to the Top Five: Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Matt Giraud, fanatics are casting their votes on which two singers will go head to head on this year’s live finale, airing Tuesday, May 19.
Outspoken judge Simon Cowell has an idea.
“I would put my money on Adam [Lambert] and Danny[Gokey] … It is going to be Adam and somebody,” Simon revealed at a Monday afternoon press conference for the NBC series, America’s Got Talent, premiering Tuesday, June 24 at 9 PM.
“I would like to see Adam and Danny because I think they are the best two singers, and at the end of the day that is what should happen.”

Not everyone is moved by the story of Susan Boyle, the shy Scot who went from “ugly duckling” to singing Internet sensation in a matter of days.
Cynical New York Post columnist Maureen Callahan believes “there is something disturbing” about how quickly Susan’s modern day Cinderella story captivated the world after her humbling performance of “I Dreamed A Dream,” from the musical Les Miserables, on Britain’s Got Talent this month.
After learning that judge Simon Cowell has reportedly been working on both movie and album deals for Boyle’s future in showbusiness, Callahan has become convinced that the acid-tongued mogul engineered Susan’s tale in a bid to garner ratings for the ITV series.
Talk about being jaded.

Simon Cowell is planning to step down as judge of American Idol next year.
Simon, who also judges Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor, flies between America and the UK four times a week during the A.I. season. He also heads a record label and television production firm. Now the media mogul has revealed that he may have to leave his post at Idol once his contract expires in 2010 in a bid to relieve himself from his exhausting workload.
“I don’t want to come over as whiney because I am very grateful that I have got these jobs. But there is a point where I am not sure we can keep this schedule up. It takes longer and longer to make these shows because you have to put more into them, and I am not sure we can sustain me doing three shows…” Simon told reporters for the Daily Express last week.
“Most people do one show a year and I do three and they involve a lot of travelling. One may have to go. I don’t know which one. That is the problem, I like all of them. I can’t imagine not doing Britain’s Got Talent and I can’t imagine not doing X Factor . But I guess America is more likely to go because I have got one year under contract. Maybe that will be the end,” he added.
